About Govia Thameslink Railway
Not sure which area of our business you'd like to work in?
Work experience is a great way to get an understanding of a role and see what a working day looks like and we have many programmes to choose from.
We open our doors for work experience every year to look for our stars of the future and this year it will be between April and July. We are the largest train operating company in the UK with more passengers, more people and more trains than anyone else in the country and you can come and spend a week or two in an area of your choice. Make sure you can get to your chosen location within 90 minutes at the most.
Below are the programmes on offer for Central London and the south coast.
Stations – 1 week programme
Are you a people person? Why not try a week at one of our busiest stations in London to see how a station runs and the different roles involved. Take a look at how technology is being used to enhance the passenger experience. You also have a visit to the Control Centre to see how train running information is fed to the stations and how passenger safety/security is monitored and the importance of their interaction with station staff. There is a coastal programme and a London programme.
Engineering, Various Depots – 1 week programme
Engineering is a major part of our business, so if you like to know how things work; take them apart and put them back together again, then maybe the engineering life is for you. You will find out about a unit’s full life cycle when it is not in service. The importance of maintaining, tracking and looking after our fleet on a daily basis.
Trainee Train Driver, London Depot – 1 week programme
Would you like to be a train driver? We will take you on a whirl wind journey of how to be a train driver. You will start at the very beginning and visit the Recruitment Team to see how we choose our potential drivers. Then you will go to depot and take part in some training and receive a certificate for completing the simulator trial. Then, on to meet the people already doing the job and tour the depot. After all that you may have a chance of a cab ride to experience the reality of driving a train.
The Rail Operating Centre (ROC) – 1 week programme
We have a state of the art centre based at Three Bridges, the focal point for Rail Operations in the South East of England. You will have the chance to shadow the fast paced the day to day challengers that arise for our Train Service Managers, Service Delivery Managers and Customer Ambassadors. Whether that is the train service plan (timetables) across a wide geographical area, infrastructure constraints and train failures, to keeping our customers up to date on what is happening in real time.
When completing the application form, if it asks for your National Insurance number and you do not have one yet, please type in NB 000000B
